The New Year, which arrived on a rare blue moon eclipse night, will now see an annular solar eclipse today. Experts say the skies probably haven’t looked this alluring for a really long time and will also not for many more years to come.

Numerologist Bhavikk Sanghavi claims that according to numerology, today is the day of love, romance, harmony and peace. He says, “Especially for people with numbers 3, 6, 8 and 9 it should be a great day for love. And if they are thinking of proposing to anyone, they should do it today. In all probability they should be able to win their love. And also, if people are planning to buy anything expensive, they should do it today.”

Casting aside any superstitions associated with eclipses, astrologer Raj Rao says there is nothing to worry about. “This eclipse will not have any bad effect on any of the star signs. So nobody needs to worry.”

As concerns astronomy, Umesh Kumar, the director of Nehru Science Centre, says, “A disc of sun will be visible around the moon today. We call it a ‘blue moon’, which is derived from the English phrase ‘once in a blue moon’ as it is a very rare phenomenon. Today is the time to cherish the beauty of the moon.

Many experts say that the moon is slowly moving away from Earth. So, probably after 1,000 years, the moon would appear just like a speck in the sky from the Earth. Then we may not be able to watch such things at all.”

What is an annular eclipse?

An annular solar eclipse is one where the disc of the moon covers the central portion of the sun, leaving only a ring-like peripheral region visible. It’s called the ring of fire. It occurs when the sun and the moon are exactly in line but the apparent size of the moon is smaller than that of the sun. The eclipse will be visible from some islands in the Indian Ocean and southern and south-eastern extremes of India.
