Seven trailers from The Game Awards 2016, including the "Assassin's Creed" movie, expansions for "Rocket League" and "Shovel Knight," "Guardians of the Galaxy," "The Walking Dead 3," and "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild."

There's no "Assassin's Creed" game this year -- no new core entry, that is, allowing us to discount two "Assassin's Creed Chronicles" releases and the three-game "Ezio Collection."

Instead, December 21 brings with it the Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard feature film adaptation, directed by Justin Kurzel of "Macbeth" and "Snowtown."

An extended action sequence from the film was debuted by 20th Century Fox showing Fassbender's cloaked assassin in pursuit of a kidnapped child.20th Century Fox showing Fassbender's cloaked assassin in pursuit of a kidnapped child.

"Rocket League" helped redefine online multiplayer and eSports in one swoop, its oddball but supremely accessible blend of soccer and remote control cars an instant hit in 2015.

New arena Starbase Arc adds a fresh injection of novelty and the free extra goes live from December 7, with a futuristic looking car optional at $1.99.

Speaking of small-team successes, another 2015 darling is back in "Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment".

Powered by randomly generated level layouts and the idea that each generation's Shovel Knight is better than the last, early 2017's "Specter of Torment" add-on introduces a new hero, new enemies, and new moves. A considerable makeover.

Narrative adventure specialists Telltale debuted two trailers at The Game Awards.

A five-episode "Guardians of the Galaxy" was formally announced for computers, consoles and mobiles with a short scene-setting clip after a November leak.

While "The Walking Dead: Season 3" was given nearly three full minutes of the sort of crucial decisions awaiting a new batch of survivors (and a cameo from previous seasons' Clementine). Episodes 1 and 2 are due December 20.

Eagerly awaited for 2017 is "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild," Nintendo emphasizing its importance with two videos: one a general, story-driven montage (youtu.be/vDFZIUdo764),

The other video, about four minutes' worth of gameplay edited down from a lengthier, commentated session.
