MWC (Mobile World Congress) and the CES (Consumer Electronics Show) have been the biggest platforms for mobile manufacturers to show off their products for years. While we saw lots of new products at the CES, the upcoming MWC is where all the big guys like to play. Smartphone makers are known to launch flagship devices at the event every year and it looks like this year is no different. With only a few days left for the event Samsung, HTC, LG and the others are ready to pull out the big guns. Here’s what you can expect in the mobile space at the MWC.

HTC

HTC will definitely be launching the HTC One M9 at MWC on,  going by a tweet by HTC Ireland. The interwebs have been buzzing with leaks for quite a while now and we already know a lot about the One M9. The device will be running a Snapdragon 810 along with 3GB of RAM, running Sense UI 7 on top of Android 5.0 Lollipop. HTC is planning to stick with the 5-inch Display and the aluminium unibody construction.

Looking at the leaked images it’s clear that HTC is using a bigger 20 megapixel camera sensor on the M9 and a 4 Ultrapixel front facing camera, which should take better selfies in low light. We can expect the BoomSound speakers to stay. HTC might also enter into the wearable segment with an HTC One Wear device which, interestingly, is an Android Wear device but is said to work with the iPhone too.

Sony

Last year wasn’t smooth sailing for Sony; after lowering projections, CEO Kazuo Hirai has also hinted at a possible sale of the mobile division in the future. The Sony Z4 Tablet managed to leak ahead of the MWC and it sports a 2K display. The leak also mentions “latest ultra fast processor” and “industry leading battery performance” which might just be the Snapdragon 810. Its predecessor, the Z3 Tablet Compact has an 8-inch display. With the Compact tag missing, the Z4 Tablet might just be a 10-inch device.

It is still not clear if Sony will be launching the Xperia Z4 at the MWC. With Sony switching back to the one-year upgrade cycle, it may be possible that the launch has been pushed back by a couple of months. The Z4 is expected to launch with the Snapdragon 810 along with a new IMX 230 camera sensor. That aside, recent news suggest the launch of the Xperia M4 Aqua, a successor to the M2 Aqua, which never made it to India. We may, however, get a non-waterproof device in the form of the Xperia M4. It seems to be a habitual practice for Sony to skip numbers in the model names, like this one, where there was no M3 Aqua, or how there was no Xperia E2 between the E1 and the E3.

LG

LG had launched the G Flex 2, a curved phone and the first phone to sport a Snapdragon 810 processor, at CES. The chances of LG launching the G4 seem bleak but it looks like they are launching a few mid range phones and a new wearable device.

Having already announced 4 mid range phones just before the MWC, these phones will definitely be on display at the event. The devices, named Magna, Spirit, Leon and Joy, have designs similar to the current flagship, the LG G3. These devices will be running Android 5.0 Lollipop at launch and are rumoured to have LTE and 3G variants.

While LG already has two Android Wear devices in the market, it looks like they are experimenting with other operating systems. At CES, LG along with Audi had displayed a prototype of their WebOS watch and on Feb 25 a few days before the MWC, they launched the Urbane LTE smartwatch. The watch runs on WebOS and it sports GPS, NFC and voice calling over 4G LTE. It looks like a direct competitor to Samsung’s Gear S.

Lenovo

The Chinese manufacturer had a good run last year with the Vibe X2 and the Vibe Z2 Pro. At the recently held CES they announced the Vibe X2 Pro, a successor to the X2 and, if rumours are to be believed, Lenovo has got a lot of announcements at the MWC.

Lenovo plans to launch the Vibe S1, Vibe X3, Vibe P1, Vibe P1 Pro and the Vibe Max. The Vibe S1 is aimed at the young crowd and is expected to launch in multiple colors. The Vibe X3 sounds like a successor to the Vibe X2 series and rumoured to have front facing stereo speakers. The Vibe P1 and the P1 Pro will be phones with big batteries with the P1 having a 4000mAh battery and the P1 Pro sporting a 5000mAh unit.

The interwebs will be buzzing with news from Barcelona today but if you aren’t willing to spend a lot of money on the latest and greatest, now is a good time to set price drop alerts for phones, that their successors above will be replacing.
