Spiderman is coming to Marvel, but what does it mean for the web head?

It’s official; comic book nerds rejoice! The cocky web-slinger is, after much clamour and heartbreak, finally making his way to his rightful place among the Avengers!

A character second only to Batman in his Hollywood reboot tendencies, Spiderman is leaving his evil foster parents’ hands at Sony pictures and moving to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Emails leaked during the major Sony hack in last year had pointed to an offer Marvel made to Sony, but it was thought that the latter turned it down. Thankfully, someone realised it was a golden opportunity. A joint press release from both companies, on Monday night, stated that Spidey will appear in one of Marvel’s Phase 3 films first, and will have his own movie coming out mid-2017. The new reboot will be produced, financed and distributed by Sony Pictures, and co-produced by Amy Pascal of Sony and Kevin Feige of Marvel Studios, but Marvel will also have significant creative control.

So what does this mean for our friendly neighbourhood Spiderman? Firstly, that Phase 3 movie appearance can’t be Avengers: Age of Ultron, or Antman, both to release this year, but will most likely be at least a cameo in Captain America: Civil War. This is the more likely of the 2016 releases to feature the web head (the other being Dr Strange) thanks to Spiderman’s significance in the Civil War comic book storyline, which is supposed to be the basis of the upcoming Captain America film.

Secondly, this means that Spiderman will finally be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with the likes of Captain America, Iron Man and Thor. No word yet on whether he’ll get a chance to schmooz with Captain Marvel or the Guardians of the Galaxy, but we can always hope. Sony has also confirmed that Marvels franchise characters will make appearances in future Spiderman solo films.

Thirdly, we’re going to have to wave goodbye to Andrew Garfield, personally my preference for a cocky, trash talking Spiderman, as compared to the mopey, whiney, Tobey Maguire version. And in the meantime, #Spidey is trending on Twitter, and fans are just going nuts.
