With the Mobile World Congress (MWC) barely underway in Barcelona, we’ve already started seeing big-ticket announcements from A-list mobile phone manufacturers. The biggest news up until now has been the unveiling of the much anticipated Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge, and the LG G5. Both sporting the most bleeding-edge of capabilities, it’s interesting to note the subtle difference the two devices in terms of the use cases each of these devices are targeted at. For the sake of a quick comparison, we’re considering the Galaxy S7 against the LG G5 here.

With Samsung’s latest, it’s most interesting to note that the Galaxy S7 has the much-requested IP68 (that happens to be top-of-the-line) dust and waterproof capabilities. Also the S7 will reportedly be available with up to 128GB of internal storage--a sizeable amount that is only enhanced with the inclusion of a microSD slot. Although the microSD slot is part of its ‘Hybrid dual SIM’ system where it becomes a toss up between added storage or a second SIM card.

The S7’s camera system is interesting--featuring a seemingly lower-resolution 12MP primary camera, it is based on a ‘dual pixel’ sensor and an f/1.7 lens. This dual pixel technology features an image sensor with larger pixel sizes--purportedly 30 percent bigger than those on the iPhone 6S--resulting in improved low-light performance.

On the other hand the LG G5, while it shares virtually identical core specifications with the S7, now sports their unprecedented ‘modular’ approach: the phone’s functionality can actually be extended by swapping out selected subsystems such as a larger battery, a camera grip add-on, a Bang & Olufsen based sound system that slides into the phone case, or a 135-degree wide-angle lens that enables the smartphone to function as a regular camera.

The G5 is also built to interoperate with fun accessories including a drone controller, a VR headset and a spherical robot that is controlled via the smartphone. The G5 also has a dedicated always-on display that displays key notifications without having to turn the may screen on, while the Galaxy S7 has this always-on feature built into its primary screen.

So whether it’s an active lifestyle focused superphone you’re looking for, or one that can shapeshift to fit several manner of real-life uses, it’ll all boil down to how these phones are priced when they eventually reach our shores.

Stay tuned as we bring you more excitement around the mobile news coming from Barcelona.
