The faithful pen has suffered another blow, with popular writing app Scrivener now available on iOS.

The process of writing a novel did very rarely run smooth, but Scrivener aims to help lighten the load a little. From storing deleted text for later, to complete restructuring, note taking and formatting, the app is designed to take as much of the organisational stress out of writing as possible.

Scrivener was created by Keith Blount who, ironically, developed the app while procrastinating over a novel and thesis he was writing at the time. Literature & Latte, the software company behind Scrivener, was created as a result a few years later, and is now a sponsor of National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), an internet-based creative writing project that takes place in November. The project challenges participants to write 50,000 words in the space of a month in order to help break writers' block, and encourage writers to get text down on the page, then edit later. In 2015, over 430,000 people signed up for the challenge.

How the app works

Some have criticised Scrivener for being overly complicated, while others find it easy to navigate. On the main screen upon opening the app is where the user's different projects are located. Within the project is a "binder", where the files associated with the project are stored: drafts, research and trash. The app can also be synchronised with other devices via Dropbox, so that users can pick up where they left off regardless of whether they are on their iPhone or computer. Non-iOS users will have to wait, however, as Scrivener is not yet available on Android.
