Samsung Forum 2016 | Launching the new Galaxy A5 and A7 phones

We were recently at the recently Samsung Forum in Kuala Lumpur where the company outed their newest products destined for the India market. We weren't really expecting to see the Samsung Galaxy S7 at the Samsung Forum but we still went there with a glimmer of hope that it might show up, mysteriously. It didn't. Yes, that is almost a certainty on February 21 in Barcelona; the #unpacked hashtag has already started to trend. Samsung has almost made it a habit to use the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona to launch its flagship devices. At KL the focus was on some major products that will hit the Indian market shortly.

The showstoppers were clearly the 2016 editions of the A5 and the A7,  hot on the heels of the success of the A series in 2015. The A series helped Samsung break major ground in the 20,000 – 30,000 segment -  the company claims it helped expand its market share from 30 to 60% in just 4 months in 2015. Samsung believes that a mix of good looks (glass and metal) combined with top of the line features will help it further consolidate its presence in this segment through 2016.

The A5 and the A7 are remarkably thin – just 7.33 mm, but it's the ultra-slim 2.7 mm bezel that is the device’s key design highlight. Both devices are powered by the Samsung Exynos processor (with 2GB of RAM for the A5 and 3GB of RAM for the A7) and come with 16GB memory onboard. The devices come with a dual SIM option and a Micro SD slot. The other big improvement is the battery – 2900 mAh for the A5 and 3300 mAh for the A7; Samsung claims that users will find a 25% improvement in battery performance. The A5 and the A7 sport a 13MP shooter and a 5MP selfie cam. The A5 is priced at Rs 29,400 while the A7 is priced at Rs 33,400 and will be available on Snapdeal and offline from Feburary 15.

Also spotted at the Samsung Forum KL was the Samsung Tab ProS. Samsung didn’t reveal the price point but announced that the device is likely to keep its date with India in April 2016. The arrival of the newest Surface Pro 4 and the iPad Pro suggests the laptop-tablet hybrid segment could seriously hot up this year and the arrival of the new ProS powered by Windows 10 will complete the ‘Pro’ picture. The device is a touch below 700 gms with a 12-inch screen and comes bundled with a ultra slim keyboard that is lighter than the iPad Pro keyboard (an optional accessory). I couldn't spot a stylus at the event but given Samsung’s strong S Pen credentials, expect a productivity device that will be among the best in class.

The other products at the showcase included Samsung’s new SUHD TV that incorporates a Quantum Dot Display – 1 billion colours, 1000 NIT HDR (essentially high brightness with Ultra blacks). It's also one of the first ‘bezel-less’ curved TVs in the world. The brand also showed off an innovative refrigerator with five convertible modes and the new Samsung AddWash front loading washing machine that allows you to toss in extra garments (like that lone sock) into a washing machine halfway through a washing cycle.
