Samsung launches a minuscule, portable solid state drive based on their new generation 3D Vertical NAND (V-NAND) technology.

Being completely solid state (no moving parts), the device is more resilient to physical shock and is up to 5x faster than a traditional platter-based external hard disk drive. The drive clocks sequential read/write speeds of up to 450 MB/sec, also facilitated by its USB 3.0 interface. Random read/write activity is pegged at 8,000 inputs/outputs per second (IOPS) and 21,000 IOPS respectively. This bandwidth is especially useful in applications needing large and quick file transfers such as audio/video editing, database management and the like.

The drive also incorporates 256-bit hardware encryption for safeguarding its data, which can be enabled with a single password. The device can withstand a shock of up to 1,500G/0.5ms and also features a Dynamic Thermal Guard that activates to safeguard data in case of extreme temperature conditions.

The V-NAND fabrication technology used in this drive enables packing together a higher number of storage cells, resulting in greater storage density and higher performance: the drive weighs in at 30 grams, which is about a tenth that of traditional disk-based external hard disks. This architecture also helps reduce cell-to-cell electrical crosstalk, begetting higher data reliability.

The drive is crafted with a black chrome metal coating that is laser patterned and is compatible with both Windows and Mac computers using the exFAT file format.

The SSD T1 will be available in three capacities: 250GB (Rs 12,000), 500GB (Rs 18,000) and 1TB (Rs 35,000). It is on sale at online stores including Flipkart, Amazon and Snapdeal, with a tape-out to retail stores to follow subsequently.
