Qualcomm has announced their top end chipset -- the Snapdragon 835 -- that will replace the Snapdragon 820/821. Additionally, a new fast charging feature has also been announced, Quick Charge 4.0 which will be integrated with Snapdragon 835. The new chip is expected to be introduced in the first half of 2017, indicating devices fitted with the new chipsets will hit the markets sometime after that.

Qualcomm hasn't leaked any information about the latest chip. But, the reports suggest it will be associated with Samsung Electronics and utilise their 10-nanometer process rather than a 14-nanometer process used in the current flagships models. The 10 nanometer FinFET process will offer higher performance, lower power consumption and an increase in area efficiency.

In addition, a few details about the Quick Charge 4.0 was disclosed. Qualcomm claims the chipsets can get “5 hours of use from just 5 minutes of charging.” the company goes on to say that the new feature is engineered to charge a smartphone and power it up to 50 percent in 15 minutes or less than that.

Compared to its predecessor, 4.0 is 20 percent faster and 30 percent more efficient. Staying in compliance with Google’s new specifications for USB Type-C charging, Qualcomm has kept in mind the accurate measurement of voltage, current and temperature to protect devices as well as chargers from damage. Apart from that, it will also protect the battery against overcharging and will be built for USB Power Delivery and USB Type-C support.
