According to reports, it seems to be confirmed that Sony is releasing a new PlayStation, though the upgrade is not as dramatic as you’d expect.

According to GiantBomb, the new “PlayStation 4.5” is being referred to as PlayStation NEO internally, and only ups the hardware somewhat, though it’s far from a full refresh. The NEO will still have the same eight Jaguar cores as the PlayStation 4, but here they’ve been overclocked to 2.1GHz from 1.6GHz. RAM is still the PS4’s 8GB DDR5, but now has 218GBps data rates compared to the old 176GBps. However the GPU does receive a significant upgrade with the AMD Graphics Core Next (GCN) now packing double the computational units at 36, as well as clocked higher at 911MHz compared to 800MHz on the PS4.

The hardware boost shows signs of Playstation’s push toward 4K console gaming, though it won’t be a mandatory requirement for game titles, as well as a slight redesign to help run virtual reality titles in the near future with the PlayStation VR. New games being released from October onwards will be required to support the regular PS4 as well as the NEO, aside from the optionals.

However, there’s still no mention of when we can be expecting the upgrade, or what it will even be officially called. Rumours put the launch date somewhere in October and, given the specification for games releasing after that deadline, we assume they’re right.
