Washington, May 5 (ANI): Pinterest has rolled out its own Developer Platform that will allow app developers to tap into the platform for performing a range of activities with their own.

According to the TechCrunch, developers can now glean information about the kinds of things that users have pinned on their boards, and can then figure out ways to use that information.

Josh Inkenbrandt, Pinterest's developer platform lead said that they hosted an internal event to see what people would build on content available on Pinterest and the results were really cool, so they realized they need to be able to start opening it up and seeing what developers would want to do. They have crafted their policies to make sure the incentives are aligned with developers, with Pinterest and with users.

Though Pinterest user information is generally public, the company states that apps will still require authorization from users and those users are free to revoke access to their information at any point.

Pinterest is one of the last major social networking platforms that developers have not had access to. Pinterest activity tends to be very forward-looking and aspirational including travel, renovation ideas, recipes and the like. All of which can be translated to highly lucrative opportunities for third-party developers.

Pinterest has earlier released APIs (Application Programming Interfaces: the components that enable third parties to 'hook' into their platform), but they have mostly been geared toward marketers rather than third-party developers. Pinterest released its Marketing Developer Partners program, which gives brands more tools for creating better pins.

The company has not launched with any development partners initially. Inkenbrandt said that this was to attract entrepreneurs and developers who will invent new use cases that sit on top of Pinterest. The group will be small, in the tens or hundreds initially, and then would grow methodically as Pinterest is able to handle operationally from a development and policy standpoint

At present the platform is only open to US developers. (ANI)
