Palaces across Europe open their virtual gates on Twitter for Palace Day

Some of the most beautiful palaces across Europe are taking to Twitter to promote the heritage of their royal history in celebration of Palace Day 2016.

On July 19, member palaces of the Association of European Royal Residences have been joining the online Twitter conversation using the hashtag #palaceday to tweet interesting factoids about their individual legacies.

Buckingham Palace, for instance, tweeted about the number of its rooms  -- 775, including 19 state rooms, 92 offices and 78 bathrooms -- along with photos illustrating its red and gold-fringed splendor.

According to @TheRoyalFamily's twitter feed, when the Queen is at Buckingham palace, she is given a bouquet of fresh flowers from her garden each week.

Likewise, La Venaria Reale highlighted the fact that the facade of the Palazzo Madama in Turin was inspired by the Palace of Versailles in France.

Twitter users are also chiming in, tweeting photos of their summer visits to palaces around Europe for armchair and virtual travelers.

Members of the Association of European Royal Residences must be a royal place of residence in Europe, and open to the public.

The association was created in 2001 under the initiative of the Palace of Versailles.

Visitors are also encouraged to share their photos and experiences on Twitter using the hashtag #palaceday.
