After 17 years, it’s back -- the new-and-improved Nokia 3310. At the Mobile World Congress underway at Barcelona, Nokia took the wraps of the device that fans had been hankering for,  keeping it simple and classy and very reminiscent of its predecessor while flaunting a 2017-ready design. Most importantly, it will have a rebooted version of Snake -- the classic game that many will remember fondly.

The new Nokia 3310 is slimmer than the original and if it is anything like its predecessor, it should be tough as nails. Nokia went to the extent of even retaining the original Navy Blue and Grey color variants, and added two new colors: Warm Red and Yellow.

The new Nokia 3310 is unmistakably a feature phone, sporting a 2.4-inch QVGA display, Nokia's Series 30+ OS. We aren’t sure if the device will support popular apps like WhatsApp and can't even be sure at this point if it will include the ability to load extra apps besides the ones preloaded. Unlike the first version, this one now has a color display and includes 16GB of internal storage that can be expanded by 32GB via a microSD card -- just what's required to store a set of songs and the basic photos its 2MP rear camera (with LED flash) camera captures.

It is powered by a 1200mAh battery that is rated to deliver a maximum talk time of up to 22.1 hours, listening to MP3 songs it is rated to go for 51 hours, and its standby time extends to 31 days. That's right, the battery can last for up to a month on a single charge!

The phone only supports a 2G network so web surfing with its built-in Opera Mini browser is rudimentary at best. Also its lack of Whatsapp support is a huge downer. So this becomes an all-out secondary phone (if you're a hardcore Nokia 3310 enthusiast,) or a basic device for folks who can't be bothered by apps and the like. Its steroidal battery life does however make it ideally suited to packing along before a long road trip, or a week away at a remote camp.

But kudos to HMD Global for doing justice to the design -- even though the new phone is slimmer and more compact, it definitely harkens to the 3310 and its easy to become awash in a wave of nostalgia. The device is priced at EUR 49 (approximately Rs 3500,) and it will be interesting to see whether it hits a sweet spot when its local pricing is announced.

Either way, this phone could well be a winner -- un-smart features notwithstanding.
