Nintendo gets nostalgic with vintage Famicom, 'Zelda'

Japanese console giant Nintendo has unearthed a mint, vintage Famicom console from its archives, a month before a special miniaturized edition is launched at retail.

Ostensibly tracking the history of "The Legend of Zelda," a franchise now in its 30th year and to receive a console-launching update by way of March 2017's "Breath of the Wild," Nintendo retrieved a 30-year-old console from its archives.

The Famicom -- short for Family Computer -- was hooked up to a Disk System accessory that let the cartridge-based console read custom-made floppy disks. With a chunky CRT television also called into service, the stage was set for revisiting the first "Legend of Zelda" game or, at least, its opening title screen.
