Just moved to a new city in India? Teething problems? No worries; we scoured the App stores to cull out apps that can make that move a tad smoother. From utilities to cool events in your city, our list covers fair ground.

Utilities

It’s hard enough finding help in a neighbourhood you know well imagine looking for a carpenter or electrician in a whole new city. Timesaverz (Available on Google Play and the App Store) rounds up an impressive array of services from car cleaning to pet grooming and plumbing to carpentry. You can pay while you book on the App or after the service is delivered. UrbanClap (Download on Google Play)is positioned as a solution provider for Urban lifestyle services. So if you need a birthday planner for your kid’s first party in a new town or a make up professional to sort you out while you chill in your living room, this might well be the App for you.

Dining

Need to recommend a restaurant for a client meeting over lunch near your office? Restaurant Finder (App Store and Google Play) rounds up restaurants all over the world (India included) based on their location with relevant coordinates, ratings and reviews. Zomato’s (App Store and Google Play) sheer range of listings across Indian cities is quite exhaustive. Almost every restaurant listing features multiple user reviews.

Personal Assistant:

Sure, Siri can respond to your queries and play ball whenever you ‘press’ for help. But what if you want action – like actually make a reservation at that restaurant or help you shop for flowers for your partner? Haptik (Google Play and App Store) functions like your virtual personal assistant – almost like a digital concierge. From checking you into flights to shopping to finding tables at restaurants, this App can do a fair bit.

Dating:

Yes, not too many people in India like to admit they need ‘App’ intervention to help them find a weekend date or a soul mate but a large number of singles do. We can’t really a recommend an India-specific dating App for you but Apps like Tinder and Zoosk (Available across platforms) should do the trick. They have quite a few Indian users and fewer fake profiles. Needless to say use your discretion and keep an open mind!

Local transportation:

A couple of years ago, there were hardly any Indian transport utility Apps that measured up against their global counterparts. That’s changed somewhat; m-Indicator (Available for Windows, Apple and Android devices) does a good job of aggregating Mumbai’s local trains, Bus services and newer Metro services. From fares, schedules and special alerts this App has quite a lot of useful titbits for first time commuters if you are willing to wade through the cluttered screens. The Delhi Metro Rail (DMRC)’s  official app (Windows, Apple and Android) does a nifty job of mapping all the routes and schedules.

Local Events:

Need to catch a fun gig over the weekend or impress your weekend date with tickets to a high quality stage production? Eventbrite (App Store and Google Play) is one of the most popular event listing Apps out there. It’s not all just entertainment you can even find weekend crash courses in everything from Mandarin to Hadoop in your city (That might be your idea of fun!). Towntrot (Google Play) is a relatively new App that currently covers events in Delhi and Bengaluru. The App has a cool user interface that lists events and locations on a map allowing you to pick the one that’s closest and most relevant for you.
