New mental training app Lucid launched this week, offering meditations and mindfulness practices to improve athletic performance. With the increasing trend for practicing daily mindfulness and meditation, now shown in a variety of recent studies to have numerous health benefits, the number of apps on the market has also increased. Popular and well-known meditation app Headspace already offers users mindfulness techniques, while Omvana focuses on meditation to help improve relaxation and sleep.

However there has also been a focus on looking at the benefits of meditation and mindfulness for sports performance. A 2011 study published in the Journal of Human Kinetics details several examples of athletes achieving better scores thanks to mindfulness training, with a 2008 study published in the journal Psychology of Sport and Exercise also showing evidence of a link between mindfulness and improved competition results.

And a new study published just last month which also focused on the power of the mind for improved athletic performance suggested that the key to being a great athlete could be down to a positive attitude towards the sport and training and to mental not just athletic performance.

And this is where Lucid comes in. Developed by Jason Stirman, previously at Twitter, the app offers mindfulness and mental training to specifically enhance and support physical training.

Stirman has recruited various sports coaches to offer their professional advice on the app alongside mindfulness meditations, including George Mumford -- known for his work with sports stars Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan -- and Graham Betchart -- trainer to NBA players Ben Simmons, Andrew Wiggins and Karl-Anthony Towns.

And the idea is also supported by the athletes themselves, not just scientific studies. Stirman told tech website TechCrunch that "Kobe (Bryant) says he owes 80 percent of his performance to mental training", while Orlando Magic Forward Aaron Gordon specifically credits Lucid for helping improve his sports training, saying training with the app has allowed him to reach his full potential on the court.

Stirman points out that Lucid is suitable for all sports performers, not just elite athletes, with the app promising to help you become a better athlete in less than five minutes a day. Simply download and log on, set your goals, and then choose your expert coach who will guide you through daily meditations and training to help you focus on being in the moment, visualize your goal, and improve your confidence in your performance.

Lucid is available to download now on the App Store. Meditation training is for free for up to five days; afterwards users can either pay a month subscription fee of $9.99 per month or a yearly subscription of $99.99.
