Culture Machine is to release a 360 degree Virtual Reality video on their YouTube Channel, Being Indian, which also happens to be country's first 360 degree video on YouTube. The channel constructs great stories in the form of digital video content specific to Indian culture.

Sameer Pitalwalla, Co-Founder & CEO, Culture Machine said "Internationally the concept of VR has been in use for some time, be it in the form of XBOX gaming or for achieving the next level in experiential movie marketing(e.g. Jurassic park). It is only recently that these formats have started gaining traction in the south-Asian market. When executed perfectly, VR tricks your brain into thinking that what you see is real, on both conscious and subconscious levels, A 360 video, on the other hand, records panoramic view from a particular fixed point in space. Although in its nascent stages, the engagement on 360 degree videos is on a remarkable rise thanks to global giants like Facebook and Google's YouTube offering their own 360 video platforms. Another plus point with 360 videos is that they are much more feasible for content creators as the logistics involved in making them are fewer in comparison to VR. VR requires dedicated set ups and demand heavy budgets whereas 360 degree videos are now a recurring feature on many daily use websites. At Culture Machine, our aim is not only to provide content that is entertaining & informational, but also to create a space for innovation in content creation".

"Case in point, the Mumbai Darshan video is a first of its kind 360 degree view of the city's skyline allowing viewers to have a truly interactive experience. They can scroll in any direction to have a window view similar to that of the protagonists, allowing them a virtual walk through the city. These videos represent the paradigm shift in how people interact with each other, the applications of which go far beyond gaming and movies", Pitalwalla added.

Venkat Prasad, Co-Founder & CTO, Culture Machine said "Every decade there is a new hardware platform that brings about profound change in our way of life as consumers and disrupts business. The desktop computing revolution of the 80's was followed by the connectivity revolution of the 90's, followed by broadband internet & mobile revolution in the first 2 decades of this century. Every building block of the earlier era brings paradigm shift in productivity and 10X improvements in way of life. Virtual reality has the potential to make this type of quantum change in our lives in the next few years. With the underlying infrastructure such high speed internet using smartphones and video on-demand ubiquitously available, a whole new approach to visual story-telling & engagement using 360 degrees immersive experience is currently in the making that will change the way consumers are entertained and business operate. Imagine a world where gaming, entertainment, infotainment, training, business can all be conducted at the finger tip of one's phone anywhere and anytime in a virtual world that is alternate reality".

"The hardware and software is getting there and is rapidly evolving and the adaption would be a lot faster, since it takes literally only a head-set along with smartphone to experience VR. Here the VR experience will range from a highly immersive, realistic experience using head-mounted displays provided by various vendors like Oculus, Jaunt, Magic-leap & GearVR (Samsung), to simpler but still engaging VR experience using Google cardboard along with a smartphone", Prasad added.

"We, at Culture Machine, have always been the pioneers in South Asia when it comes to cutting edge digital video technology and we have major plans to leverage this new global platform innovation for the benefit of our audience. To begin with, there is not enough content. This is a truly new media and form factor and we are exploring creating a high quality bank of VR library holders across verticals and genres. Additionally we plan to leverage our in-house built Video Machine platform to generate VR content at scale while also seeing how we can train our analytics recommendation engine (Intelligence Machine) to provide formats to create 360 narratives based on creative brief & topical trends. Although the VR platform is early in India, it is already taking off in a major way in the advanced markets & we plan to be the pioneers in South Asia to take VR to the masses", Prasad said.

"The 360 Hero Go Pro Rig was used to create our Mumbai Darshan video. It has 6 small gopros mounted on a rig to capture footage from different wide angles which are later stitched together to give us a 360 view." said Sonal Batra, Director of the Video.

"The experience of shooting for a 360 video is much more different than the DSLR. Since the default view is 360, you can't play with the angles or even the lens focus like with a DSLR but the format of storytelling is more inclusive so even the crew has to become part of the environment for every sequence planned" she added.
