Microsoft pushes smartphone productivity with three new India-focused apps

Skype Lite, Project Sangam, and Kaizala are all aimed at improving smartphone productivity in the entrepreneurial space.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella on Wednesday announced a series of new programs and partnerships in the coming future, aimed at driving business interactions through smartphones in India. “At Microsoft, we aim to empower every Indian and every Indian organization to achieve more,” he said in his address. “With the transformative power of the cloud, we are enabling Indian startups, businesses of all sizes, and government agencies to build new digital capability, find new growth and seize the opportunities ahead.”
 

Skype Lite

The first announcement, ‘Skype Lite’, is a variation of the Skype app for low-speed smartphone internet connections, a situation all too common in India. It will have specially designed features aimed at helping manage SMS by intelligently removing clutter, mobile data and Wi-Fi usage monitoring, India-focused Skype Bots and power saving functionality. The app will also be available in seven local languages: Gujarati, Bengali, Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu.

In addition, Skype Lite has also partnered with the Aadhaar program and will integrate its  technology by June 2017. With this, Skype users will be able to authenticate the identity of unknown callers in a variety of situations where, including job interviews, and goods and property sales. Skype Lite is available right now for free download from the Google Play store.


Project Sangam

Project Sangam, meanwhile, is a program aiming to bridge the widening skill gap in the country. By tapping into LinkedIn’s extensive data on job availability and requirements, it can enable blended online and offline teaching and learning to connect the skills learning programs directly with relevant jobs. Project Sangam will let users register using their Aadhaar identity, giving them life-long access to the platform. 
 

Kaizala

‘Kaizala’ is a new smartphone instant messenger focused on improving productivity for those always on the move. Available on both Android and iOS, it allows you to chat with individuals, group chat with your teams, and even add groups to your existing groups to communicate within large organizations or communities. The app also gives users the ability to assign jobs, and conduct polls and surveys across groups. Kaizala is available for free download, and the even the government of Andhra Pradesh (where it was tested) plans to replicate it across departments to implement real-time governance.
