Microsoft is bringing their popular database server--SQL Server--to Linux environments. Currently available exclusively within the Windows Server environment, this move makes things interesting for current database systems used on Linux, including MySQL etc.

This announcement was made on the Microsoft blog, stating that additional announcements were to be expected over the course of their Data Driven event kicking off in New York on 10 March.

“This is an enormously important decision for Microsoft, allowing it to offer its well-known and trusted database to an expanded set of customers”, said Al Gillen, group vice president, enterprise infrastructure, at IDC. “By taking this key product to Linux Microsoft is proving its commitment to being a cross platform solution provider. This gives customers choice and reduces the concerns for lock-in. We would expect this will also accelerate the overall adoption of SQL Server.”

This announcement makes things especially interesting for database administrators and developers who now have the option of mixing database environments with their hosting environments.

Among the key developments in the now cross-platform SQL Server 2016 is in-memory database support that promises up to a 100x performance increase, business intelligence support available on mobile devices including iOS, Android and Windows Phone, and new encryption capabilities that aim to keep data secure while it’s in storage, in transit as well as in memory.

Availability of SQL Server 2016 for Linux is expected to happen by mid-2017.
