Former Glee star, Melissa Benoist, has been cast as Supergirl in CBS' upcoming TV show.

The 26-year-old, who will pay the titular role of Superman's cousin, Kara Zor-El, in the series by Greg Berlanit and Ali Adler, took to Twitter to share her good news, writing, "I wish there was a superhero emoji", E! Online reported.

The show will follow Supergirl from Krypton as Kara Zor-El aka Kara Danvers. After escaping the destruction of Krypton, Kara has been hiding her powers, but at the age of 24 she decides to embrace her abilities and be the hero she was destined to be.

Other characters in the new CBS show, which would the network's first superhero TV series in years, include Jimmy Olsen, Cat Grant and Alex Danvers, Kara's foster sister.
