With Facebook and Twitter ruling the segment of online social networking, to launch a new site in this segment in a heavily invaded market like India could be quite a task.

Taking the challenge, 23-year-old Sahil Bhagat launches Vebbler, a personal social network that is still in its the beta stage.

It is one of the first social web startups in India designed on Crowd Layering Model (CLM).

Vebbler is built with a mission to create a world where people have more meaningful conversations with different relationships in their lives without one aspect of their life spilling into another. Vebbler went into beta on July 23 and rolled out its first invites on July 28.

The team behind Vebbler is mostly comprised of youths in their early 20s.

How is it different from other social networks like Facebook?
According to Sahil, the site is different from other social networking sites due to the following reasons:

1. With Internet being a massive platform, Vebbler keeps your most valued relationships safe. Giving an apt example, Vebller calls itself a personal diary whereas calls other social networks as a newspaper.

2. It gives you an option to sort your friends into groups.Today, with parents, teachers, colleagues and even bosses being present on social media. They have introduced a feature called 'Clubs' which allows a user to add a person into different layers, such as friends, family, work mates and acquaintances. This enables a user to have an entirely separate space for sharing with each relationship.

3. The team is proud of its UI and design. With Clean typefaces, flat icons, creative emoticons, simple two column layout and responsive photo galleries, Vebbler puts design at the heart of its user experience.

4. Apart from keeping the closest people in your 'Clubs' you can also follow as many people you find interesting. This makes Vebbler a great platform for public conversations too, while keeping your private life intact.

5. Profile photos are big again and photographs are stored in high quality, making Vebbler a platform for photographers and photography enthusiasts.

6. They have introduced an element called 'Social Search'. Search is beyond searching things by name. Searching interests, photos, waves and conversations around a particular topic creates a more intuitive search experience.

7. Just like hashtags and Twitter trends, build conversations in real time, follow waves that interest you and see its popularity with the Wave-O-Meter.

Strategy
"As this is still in Beta mode, we are looking at three ways in which we can reach out to people and hopefully get them to be involved in our initiative. Web has no limits with respect to reach. We have launched a YouTube channel that gives out a teaser of what Vebbler has to offer. We also went personally to seven colleges in Mumbai inviting them to join. We also contacted people individually inviting them to experience our beta site. We requested them to invite their friends on board," added Sahil.

Thy have managed to get 800 invites in just 12 days after the launch of the beta site.

The site has managed to garner responses from almost 21 countries.

"We did not expect responses from places like Saudi Arabia and Phillipines. It is heartwarming to see that people are getting curious," Sahil said.

As of now, Sahil has managed to build a small team of 7 people and is working out of a small office in Lower Parel.

" Our next target city is Pune mainly because it is the hub for universities and colleges therefore home to a massive youth population," said Sahil.

If you are saturated with Facebook and Twitter and you feel strongly about issues on privacy, then Vebbler could just be a good option.

With an initial good response, it will only be a matter of time before the user verdict is out and we can tell for sure whether Vebbler is here to stay or not.
