The Moon will have a companion tonight. If you keep an eye on the sky tonight, you will spot a spectacular heavenly body next to the moon, almost an once in a lifetime opportunity.

A visual enchantment is promised as the largest planet of our solar system, Jupiter, will be sighted really close to the moon. According to a statement given to The Journal.ie by David Moore of Astronomy Ireland, the sighting of Jupiter and Moon together is due to a “line-of-sight” effect. In reality, the distance of Jupiter from the Earth is almost 2,000 times further away than the Moon!

The two celestial bodies will appear to closest to each-other tonight and almost as close tomorrow night as well. Astronomers and star-gazers across the globe have a rare opportunity to witness a rather rare phenomenon.

AT A GLANCE
In India, this phenomenon will be visible just after mid-night.

Moore believes that this is one of the most impressive sightings of the Moon, in combination with another celestial body. He believes that this will be “one of the most spectacular events visible to the general public during 2016″.

Moore and his colleagues are even setting up telescopes for the same. Here in India, we hope for similar enthusiasm! This will definitely be a visual one cannot miss. So tonight around midnight, keep an eye open for this heavenly view.
