Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro Review: Almost Prince Charming; betrayed by a processor

The latest versatile tabtop from Lenovo may not be all it's cracked up to be, but it definitely comes close to perfection.

When we reviewed the Yoga 2 tablet a while back, we only had good things to day. For the most part, that’s true about the Yoga 3 Pro as well. As far as hybrid laptops go, this one’s a keeper, and it’s most certainly the prettiest of the bunch.

The Yoga 3 Pro sports a sleek, dusted chrome finish body, and a redesigned metal watchstrap-inspired hinge. The new hinge completes the cool image for the laptop perfectly, allowing it to remain skinny and still be flexible enough to fulfill a variety of usage roles. The laptop has two USB 3.0 ports, one USB 2.0 that doubles as your power connector, a 4-in-1 card reader slot, micro HDMI out and audio combo jack. And yet, the Yoga is just 6.4mm, and feels sublime to carry around and work on. It’s light as a feather at just 1.18kg.

The Yoga 3 Pro is powered by the new 1.1GHz Intel Core M-5Y60 processor, with 8GB DDR3L RAM and 256GB SSD storage. It’s more than enough for everyday computer usage; movie-watching, web browsing, even a bit of photo editing. But don’t expect to get any high-end gaming experience on this laptop, it struggles to handle games with even mid-range graphics.

However, you’re likely buying this laptop (if you are) for casual usage, and it does that job with flair. The 13.3” quad-HD (3200x1800p) multi-touch display is a joy for HD viewing, and, considering that the laptop flips into tablet and tent mode as well, you’ll stay very comfortable throughout that entire Game of Thrones marathon. back that up with some decent sound from the JBL speakers in the device, and you’re all set for an antisocial night in that you’ll never regret.

One glaring issue however is the laptop’s inferior battery life, as compared to similar models from other companies. Lenovo claims that the 44 Watt hour battery gives a decent 7 hours of usage, but that’s only with browsing and general web activity. Play some high quality movies however, and that number goes down further to only about 6 hours. That’s not bad enough to write this device off completely, it’s important to note that other mid-range tabtops in the market offer a battery life closer to 8 hours.

Another great thing about the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro is the keyboard design. Unfortunately, to make the device as slim as possible, the keys are incredibly flat and shallow, with a very plastic feel to them. However, Lenovo has somehow managed to fit a backlight in there, which is a godsend for nighttime work runs. The keyboard also deactivates as soon as you rotate the screen up to the 180 degree mark, to ensure your tablet-style usage doesn’t have you accidently pressing random buttons when you set the tablet down. There’s also a rubbery coating to the elevated area surrounding the keys, ensuring the keys don’t scratch on a surface either.

AT A GLANCE

All in all, the Yoga 3 Pro is a sleek-looking device, perfect for casual use. But you’ll have to think twice (and thrice) before you shell out money for it. Take the time to decide whether the the look and feel of the laptop (and it’s stellar display) are worth the battery processing power skimping. While this device is marketed as a versatile machine, it’s not really a one-size-fits-all, but it does come very close. And again, it looks SO damn good....
