After ten years away, hit detective mystery series "Professor Layton" is returning to mobiles with a new full game for iOS, Android and Nintendo 3DS called "Lady Layton: The Millionaire Ariadone's Conspiracy."

Set in London, the game follows the daughter of series mainstay Professor Layton and, with the help of her dog and her friends, she sets off to unravel the truth behind her father's disappearance.

It's the third Layton game to make it to mobiles after 2012 spin-off "Layton Brothers: Mystery Room" and only the second to be considered part of the core franchise since its debut, "Professor Layton and the Curious Village," was made available on Japanese mobiles in 2008.

Since its inception, a combination of charming characters, stylish presentation and clever puzzles have seen the Layton series win over millions of fans worldwide.

Most recently, sixth game "Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy" wrapped up the adventures of Hershel Layton himself, but Japanese game studio Level-5 left the door open for his friends, relatives and accomplices to pick up the mantle.

At the same time, Level-5 has displayed increased willingness to distribute its games on smartphone platforms rather than exclusively on video game consoles.

"Layton Brothers" was initially conceived of as part of the studio's "Atamania" series of puzzle games, and was originally destined for Nintendo DS before being reworked as an iOS release.

And "Liberation Maiden," at first only available as part of Nintendo's Guild01 compilation on the 3DS, was given a new lease of life in 2013, again on iOS -- published by Level-5, it was developed by cult dev team Grasshopper Manufacture with contributions from the animé studio behind "Fullmetal Alchemist" and "Soul Eater."

But its latest franchise launch may have provided the greatest proof of where appetites lie: the "Yo-Kai Watch" franchise comprises cartoons, comic books, merchandising and Nintendo 3DS games, with close to half a dozen apps for iOS and Android released since 2015.

Announced during Level-5's annual Vision event on July 27, 2016, "Lady Layton: The Millionaire Ariadone's Conspiracy" is set for release in Japan during Spring 2017 -- so, sometime between March and May -- with international distribution also promised for later in the year.
