Here’s something for those who want to save the environment without breaking a sweat. If commuting without increasing your carbon footprint is the goal, then a cycle exhibited at the national conference on solar energy organised by Maharani’s Science College for Women holds the key. Powered by solar energy, the cycle pedals itself.

15 companies displayed their best innovations that would directly help the society at the conference-cum-exhibition. Apart from the self pedaling cycle, there were solar lanterns, solar heaters and other solar powered devices on display. A solar cap with an in-built fan that powers itself when the sun is at its peak was another star attraction at the exhibition.

The conference that saw participation from over 200 students and university professors from across the country, was organised in a bid to promote research on harnessing solar power in India. It also featured paper presentations from both researchers and students. The inauguration was attended by MB Dyaberi, managing director of Karnataka Renewable Energy Development.

“Currently Karnataka is not able to completely harness the various forms of renewable energy. But that is because there are many hurdles. Harnessing that form of energy depends a lot on our geographical location and weather conditions,” said Dyaberi.

Sakala mission director and department of administrative reforms secretary Shalini Rajneesh, who was also present at the event, said that the time has come for the state and the country to recognise the fact that natural resources are depleting and hence should be used warily and judiciously.

However, here is some good news for those living in Bangalore – of all the cities in India,
Bangalore is probably amongst the more solar efficient ones in the country. According to C Narayan Reddy, associate professor Maharani’s Science College for Women, Bangalore ranks the highest in solar heaters.

“I don’t know about other statistics, but in terms of the number of households that have solar heaters, Bangalore comes on the top,” he said.
