Hyperloop offers India a dream: Delhi to Mumbai in 70 minutes

The company aims to connect major cities of the country with trains speeding via tunnels or tubes, using magnetic levitation technology.

Los-Angeles based Hyperloop One on Tuesday made a strong pitch for the Indian market, offering commuters a dream of travelling between Delhi and Mumbai in a matter of just 70 minutes.   

The company aims to connect major cities of the country with trains speeding via tunnels or tubes, using magnetic levitation technology. A presentation was given to the Railway Ministry in this regard. Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said his department is evaluating the developments.

“So many new technologies are coming to the fore. We are keenly watching it,” Prabhu said here participating in an event organised by Hyperloop One.

Terming the Hyperloop technolgy “very exciting”, Prabhu said “Think of travelling to Mumbai-Delhi in just 60 minutes and Mumbai to Chennai in 30 minutes. We will closely watch it how it is happening.”

He said Indian Railways has undertaken a massive exercise of modernisation of infrastructure and also increasing speed.

“India has the world’s largest rail network and we are working to upgrade it. Speed is one of the important factors and we are looking to increase the average speed of all trains. We have identified some corridors and are working on them,” Prabhu said.

“Recently we have initiated steps to increase speed on the Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Howrah route on the existing track,” he said.
