For Hyderabad resident Kranthi Kiran Vistakua, the American winter was something his body was not used to. While doing his Masters at the prestigious MIT, Kranthi realised the need for a device that could regulate body temperatures in all environments.

On returning to India, Kranthi, now 36, began his R & D. Focusing on the Peltier effect, a theory in physics whereby heat is given out or absorbed when an electric current passes across a junction between two materials, Kranthi developed a technology and Dhama Innovations was born.

In its short span as a company, Dhama Innovations, apart from patenting its technology, has developed a series of products that gives the user the option of controlling temperatures between 32 degrees Fahrenheit ( 0 degrees Celsius) and 140 degrees Fahrenheit (60 degrees Celsius) at the touch of the button.

“We began selling the temperature controlled wristband, and it was used by the US track and field athletes during the 2016 Rio Olympics,” said Kranthi, while speaking to DNA. He added that the Army Sports’ Institute in Pune has ordered a number of wristbands for its athletes. “The temperature control enables the athletes to improve their performance, and the feedback we have received suggests the same,” he added.

While explaining the science, Bhushan Gajaria, one of the investors in the company, explained that the temperature is evenly spread across the body. “When you feel cold, you rub your hands and the blood flows through the body, relieving you for a few seconds from the extreme weather. This product, however, continues regulating body temperatures, and you don’t feel the need to rub hands,” he explained.

Currently, the company, along with the wristbands, has also developed car seats, a cap, and a jacket. While the car seat and cap are commercially available, Kranthi says R&D is being conducted before it is sold in the market. “We had done some tests with Formula 1 driver Jenson Button, but as the jacket weighs a certain amount, it would hamper the speed of the car because of the weight factor. We need to develop a lighter jacket before approaching F1 authorities,” he added.

The company has approached the automobile industry and private bus, and truck operators to sell the product. “The seats can be adjusted to a certain temperature that will make the driver and passengers feel more comfortable,” he added.

The products could also be a welcome addition to the armed forces, especially those who work in extreme conditions such as in Siachen. Having said that, working with the Army Sports Institute is a start.
