The Chromecast: a nifty little media portal between your mobile gear and TV

Google’s newly-available Chromecast is a nifty little device. No bigger than a 3G dongle, this unassuming little device sticks into the regular HDMI port in your TV and boom--all of the video, audio, and image content on your phone, tablet or Chrome-enabled laptop can suddenly find its way to your big screen.

If you already own a smart TV (the kind that is Internet-connected with apps for browsing, YouTube etc) the Chromecast won’t be such a big deal--you’ll already be accustomed to experiencing the Internet at full size. But if you have an older TV and tend to consume plenty of media content on your mobile device or laptop, the ability to cast it to a big screen will be a boon.

Now when it comes to the older folks in the house, the ability to fling your phones content wirelessly to the TV is a certified awe-inspirer. Increasingly tech savvy, your folks today may already be well-accustomed to snapping photos and even taking videos of grand kids and pets using their phones, and proudly sharing it over WhatsApp or with everyone who ventures into their homes. How about giving them the ability to upscale this experience, enabling them to flaunt those special moments with a bigger eyeful? From personal experience--the glee on their faces when doing so is palpable.

With the setup being ridiculously simple--literally three steps that are guided--it takes barely a few minutes to get the Chromecast up and running. All you really need is a WiFi network at home and WiFi capable gear that contains media. Also with the recent Chromecast app update there is a Guest mode now lets you share your Chromecast with visitors, where you don’t even need to grant them access to wireless network. You’ll require an Android 4.3+ device though. Imagine a meetup where a room full of people are sharing stuff from their phones and mobile devices--reason enough to get together for a new-age video-sharing pizza party around a large-screen TV.
