Out of the 16 finalists vying to win the Google Science Fair 2016 grand prize, six are Indian.
6 out of the 16 Global finalists for the Sixth Annual Google Science Fair 2016 are of Indian descent. Out of the six students, two of those students are from India while four are of Indian origin.
The Indian students -- Shriyank K and Mansha Fatima -- and Indian origin students Nikhil Gopal, Nishita Belur, Anushka Naiknaware and Anika Cheerla along with another 10 finalists will compete for the grand prize: A $50,000 scholarship.
16-year-old Shriyank K is from National Public School, Bangalore submitted his project that is titled ‘KeepTab: A novel way to aid memory with deep learning algorithms!’
On the other hand, 15-year-old Mansha Fatima, a junior at Sadhu Vaswani International School, Hyderabad focussed on creating an ‘Automated Water Management and Monitoring System in Paddy Fields.’
15-year-old Nikhil Gopal’s idea is “a simple and inexpensive way to track progression of the malaria parasite.” By using a smartphone and a microfluidic disc, his plans to create “a portable system to detect malaria proteins using ELISA (enzyme linked immunosorbent assay).”
13-year-old Nishita Belur wants to give the world “Detection of Metal Surface Defects Using Laser Light Reflection”
Anushka Naiknaware age 13, project is on “Fractal inspired Chitosan and Carbon Nanoparticle Based Biocompatible Sensor for Wound Management.”
While Anika Cheerla, 14 plans to bring “Automated Prediction of Future Breast Cancer Occurrence from Non-Cancerous Mammograms”.
“From a breathalyzer test that could predict lung cancer to a carbon filter that may significantly decrease styrofoam waste, these top 16 projects from nine countries around the world, represent the brightest ideas to make things better through science and engineering”, said Andrea Cohan, program lead, Google Science Fair.
All finalists received an invitation for them and their families to Mountain View city, California. Needless to say, they were all excited!
The winner will be announced at a ceremony on September 27, 2016.
