Google updates its Play Store with a number of new features.
Google releases a new update for its Play Store that will help Android users save up on those precious megabytes on their cellular plan. Google has noticed that Android developers have started rolling out updates more frequently to compete in Android's growing market. This can be a problem, especially when considering that all users may not have easy access to a stable WiFi connection.
Google’s solution is an update that makes data usage more transparent as well as an algorithm that reduces the amount of data required for updates by as much as 50 percent.
Rather than downloading the entire file for an update, the technology will only download what is required and combine it with the installed app.
“For approximately 98% of app updates from the Play Store, only changes (deltas) to APK files are downloaded and merged with the existing files, reducing the size of updates. We recently rolled out a delta algorithm, bsdiff, that further reduces patches by up to 50% or more compared to the previous algorithm. Bsdiff is specifically targeted to produce more efficient deltas of native libraries by taking advantage of the specific ways in which compiled native code changes between versions,” said Google in an official blog post.
Google also made changes in the information Play Store displays. Play Store will now display actual download size instead of APK file size and will also show the data used a particular app.
Apps that use APK Expansion Files to include larger file of up to 2GB will use delta and compression algorithms to reduce the download size of “initial installs by 12%, and updates by 65% on average.”
