It seems Google Maps is beta testing out a few new features in its Android app including a “WiFi only” option.

According to Android Police, some users are seeing new options in their smartphone and tablet app, which speak largely to streamlining Google Maps’ efficiency.

The first feature is a new option in the setting menu called “WiFi only”. What it does is restrict Maps from using your cellular data, and instead run only off WiFi networks. Other details are not really clear, but it’s likely the app may still need to use small amounts of your data to run effectively. The new option replaces the older “offline areas”.

The second new addition is a notification system for public transport. The Google Maps beta now displays alerts for public transport, including delays. With a customisation screen for the notifications you want to see. However, users have reported that this particular feature is still glitchy, so it could be a while before we see it go live.

Additionally, Google also announced last week that it’s bringing users the ability to add locations and landmarks into the app, as well as edit existing markings.
