Google has added more offline features to Google Maps, including a new mode and map saving option.

If you need to navigate an area with unstable internet service, or simply want to preserve your phone data, you can toggle Google Maps to “WiFi only” mode. This lets you use the app completely offline, while still letting you use your data for other apps simultaneously. Additionally, this may also improve your smartphone’s battery life somewhat.

Another new feature is the ability to now save offline maps without compromising your phone memory. A lot of smartphones sell with limited onboard storage, which you would need for apps, photos and music. “To ensure that Google Maps users with any storage capacity can download and use offline areas when they need them most, we’ve added the ability to download your offline areas to an external SD card,” Google said in a blog post.

Lastly, another useful feature added in is for cab rides. Now, Google Maps shows a taxi tab, where you can compare prices for various ride options on your route within the app itself. All you have t do is select an option to have Google Maps take you to that app (or its page on Google Play, if you haven’t installed it).

The update is gradually rolling out to Android, with iOS to follow soon.
