Google has rebranded Project Brillo – an Android-based OS for the Internet of Things – and is now called Android Things. With this initiative, any Android developer can build a smart device using the popular Android APIs and Google services. It will include tools such as Android Studio, the Android SDK, Google Play Services, and Google Cloud Platform that developers can use to test and build a variety of smart, Web connected devices.

Google stated that in the coming months, it will provide Developer Preview updates to offer infrastructure for securely pushing regular OS patches, security fixes, and updates, as well as built-in Weave connectivity. In addition, you can begin building products using supported hardware development kits like Intel Edison, NXP Pico and Raspberry Pi 3.

Google is also updating its Weave platform to make it easier for all types of devices to connect to the cloud and interact with services like their AI-based Google Assistant. Device makers like Philips Hue and Samsung SmartThings already use Weave, and several others like Belkin WeMo, LiFX, Honeywell, Wink, TP-Link, and First Alert are reportedly implementing it.

Weave also includes a device software development kit for supported microcontrollers and a management console. The Weave Device SDK currently supports schemas for devices like light bulbs, smart plugs and switches, and thermostats. In the coming months, Google will offer support for additional device types, custom schemas/traits, and a mobile application API for Android and iOS. The company is also merging their IoT platform Weave and their Internet-connected devices brand Nest, to enable all classes of devices to connect with each other.
