In today's age of smart phones, there are thousands of games out there for mobile. But the simplest and the most common concepts are usually the best. Following Temple Run and Candy Crush, the new viral game to hit the app stores is QuizUp.

The game is fairly simple, you have over 250 categories to choose from, and you pick which ones you like. A timer ticks down as you pick one of the four options to the questions asked. It is a multi-player game and you try and beat your opponents reaction time, while picking the right answer. You challenge people from all around the world on a varied assortment of topics including art, business, movies, history, games, lifestyle, music and many more.

What really distinguishes this app from all the other trivia games out there, is the pop-culture and niche sectors to choose from. They have sections like, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, Game Of Thrones, Breaking Bad, Movie Quotes, 90's Movies, and a hundred more.

The questions appear as a rapid fire, with a timer counting down from 10, and each round consists of 7 questions, the last one being a bonus round. Convenient for playing short games during commercial breaks, elevator rides, waiting for the bus and other mundane activities.

Each player has a profile that shows their stats, country they're from and other banners, including ones that show you are the best in a particular topic. You can play your Facebook friends as well as random opponents from all across the world.

The app recognises topics you play games in frequently and includes them in your favourites, which are visible to other players and allow you to challenge people with similar interests. The end of game results also show you the point differences, stats of the game and a strategic graph explaining different points in the game. The user interface of the game is easy to navigate around, and fluid. You can also form micro-communities, being able to chat with opponents, and getting updates of QuizUp results from all around the world.

The app is free in any app store, but as with other games there are purchasable add-ons. There are various creative objectives to be unlocked as well, like the 'legionary' that you get for winning 100 matches and the 'UN Assembly' that comes once you’ve played opponents from 100 countries.

QuizUp has already been dubbed one of the biggest trivia games in the world', as well as one of the fastest selling iPhone game. In just three weeks, the trivia game for iPhone has amassed 3.5 million registered users. Plain Vanilla launched the app on November 7, and since then it has dominated the app store downloads still at the #1 spot in the Apple App Store. Unfortunately it has released only for Iphones so far, but given its popularity, Androids and the other operating systems won't be lacking for long.
