Yes, by all means go ahead and say, “Wow, how cool is that.” Developed by Dr Christoph Kohstall, a physics researcher from Stanford, and his colleagues Jelena Jovanovic and Michael Niedermayr, their creation is christened Nixie, and is effectively a foldable drone that snaps on to your wrist like a watch.

A product that could have all kinds of adventure and sports junkies go into all kinds of rapture, these wristbands fold out to form the four arms of the drone, and when deployed it follows the user using motion sensors, all the while taking video and images. They can also be controlled via gesture and can be set on timed flights, after which it returns to the user to dock onto their wrist again.

While no such device has been built as yet, the inventing team has snagged the $500,000 winning prize from Intel as part of their Make It Wearable challenge; an amount that should assist in taking this potentially game-changing device to production. The team is confident at having overcome many of the inherent challenges that would be characteristic of such a device--in-flight stability, navigation, rigidity et al.

They reckon the final device will be a shade costlier than a GoPro, and they are squarely targeting the the point-and-shoot camera market. Godspeed, we say.

Go ahead, drool at the video here:
