Want to go to space but don't have a degree in astrophysics or a million dollars? You can still get the experience of floating around in outer space like Sandra Bullock without burning a hole in your wallet.

Design studio Opaque Multimedia with advice from NASA unveiled a trailer for Earthlight, an upcoming first-person space exploration game that lets you play an astronaut aboard the International Space Station floating around 400km above Earth.

Using Oculus Rift, a virtual reality headset that is expected to debut this year, and Microsoft Kinect 2, a motion sensor.

Creating the 'virtual outer space' was nowhere near easy for the developers because even a millisecond of delay or minor deviation between the player and their avatar's movement could make the experience less exhilarating and more terrifying.

Project lead Norman Wang says that to keep it running smoothly they had to push both the software and hardware to their limit.

Their main objective was to make it as life-like as possible with consultation from NASA.

Earthlight will be available at the Opaque Multimedia booth at the 2015 Game Developers Conference this week, with a public release to follow soon after.
