A number of parties have set up fake accounts for Netflix's India service, though their motives remain unknown.
Last night at CES 2016 was quite an event for Netflix. The US-based TV-streaming service announced that it's now officially global, moving to 30 new countries and 21 supported languages. Most importantly, for our local readers, Netflix is now officially in India.
And it's easy enough to get started, all you have to do is go over to the service's website here (or in the downloaded app on your phone), save your credit details, and start a plan. The first month is free for trial, though you might receive a minor billing notification when you start (it's not actually a bill, they're just pinging to authenticate your credit card). But if there's something you want to ask Netflix, like when your favourite show is going to air it's new season, there's always Twitter right?
Wrong.
While that is a very authentic looking Twitter account for Netflix India, it's actually a fake. As is this one, though it's not nearly as believable. We contacted Netflix to inquire whether they've already established a Twitter presence in India. So why would someone use their valuable time to meticulously craft a Twitter account for a major service, even going to the extent of responding to potential customer queries? Perhaps it's a long-term plan for some form of customer service-oriented fraud, but it's more likely someone is squatting on a valuable handle and follower resource, in the hopes of making some money of Netflix when they do decide to set up an online presence here.
And that brings me to the last example for fake Netflix India accounts. Until a few minutes before this story was published, the @IndiaNetflix handle seemed innocent enough, if a little desperate in it's attempted imitation. That changed when the accounted tweeted this:
We advise you again, Netflix has no Twitter presence in India, though they plan to rectify that soon, and the accounts mentioned above are 100 percent fake. Follow/contact at your own peril.
