Facebook has been testing a new feature called profile tags.

According to the Verge, the company confirmed that it was testing them out. Facebook also said that profile tags are a creative tool that allows users and their friends to add tags to their profile to highlight the things that describe them and what they are into.

The new feature will allow the users to add tags to their own profile or allow their friends to add tags for themselves, which they must approve before the tags become publicly visible. Tags are free-form, which means the users can type in anything they want, including emojis.

User's friends will also be able to add tags by going to the users profile and tag them using words or phrases that describe the users or what they do.

The users will receive a notification prompting them to accept or decline their tags. The tags will become visible to everyone if they accept the tag. But if they decline, the tags disappear. The users could also ignore the tag notification and the tags will remain pending, visible only to them and the friend who tagged.

Other friends can 'like' the users tags when they are approved which will appear in descending order by the number of likes. It is unclear at this time how tags will actually be used though.

According to Facebook, this feature is currently only being tested in New Zealand. There is no information yet on when Facebook will be testing or rolling out the new profile tags elsewhere.
