Facebook has reportedly announced the death of its troubled @facebook.com email service.

The social networking giant said that it has already begun notifying users that all emails sent to their Facebook email address would be forwarded to their primary email address on file.

A Facebook spokesperson said that 'most people had not been using their @facebook.com address, confirming that the update effectively retires the email service, The Verge reports.

According to the report, users could also turn off the forwarding feature, and those without a primary email address on Facebook won't receive forwarded messages.

The email service was launched in November 2010, in hopes of providing one inbox where users could send and receive emails and messages, but it failed to catch on as Facebook never provided a familiar interface for emailing, including no support for cc's and bcc's or subject lines.
