The Chief Executive of Alphabet Inc -- Google’s parent company -- Eric Schmidt has dedicated his entire life to technology. His accolades span far beyond his current status, he served on various boards in academia and industry. At one point, he was on the board of directors of Apple Inc and CEO of Google but gave up his position at an Apple due to conflict of interest. Schmidt has also spent more than a few year predicting (with surprising accuracy) how technology will progress in the future. Schmidt dictated how six technologies -- or in his own words “moonshots” -- will be game changers in the future in front of a packed ballroom at the Milken Institute’s Global Conference, Los Angeles on Monday.

1) Replacing Livestock: Schmidt says that there will be less dependence on meat as a source of nutrition and sees more plant protein being utilized. A cut-down livestock consumption will decrease the number of greenhouse gasses and reduce the effect of climate change.

2) Learning with technology: Every student is different, conveyed Schmidt and Technology can add layers to learning. An educational version of Minecraft is already being used by schools to help a student learn. Furthermore, Tech can track learning progress and suggest suitable teaching approaches for different students.

3) 3D Printed Building: A 3D printer can create an accurate representation of objects from recyclable materials. According to Schmidt, an industrial sized 3D printer capable of creating assets for both residential and commercial building will likely be constructed in the future. An industrial sized 3D printer can also reduce time, energy and cost of a project.

4) Autonomous Cars: Self-driving cars are about to go viral according to Schmidt. Even though autonomous vehicles are already on the street, it is limited to select few people who can afford it but consumer friendly autonomous cars are inevitable. He believes that having self-driving cars will cut travelling time and reduce the number of accidents. Google is currently working on the technology for car companies like Ford.

5) Health on a smartphone: Apple has already got on this bandwagon, the company unveiled ResearchKit and CareKit at a press conference to ‘Empowering medical researchers’ through smartphones. Schmidt sees other company following this trend in the future.

6) Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality: With the success of virtual reality (VR) headsets like the HTC  Vive  and the first consumer version of Oculus Rift, it is clear that VR will play a big part in entertainment. However, Schmidt thinks that augmented reality is yet to find its place in sectors besides interactive entertainment. He envisions that ‘augmented reality’ will play a big part in the  automotive and education division.
