Endless Legend: A fresh take on 4X strategy

Endless Legend is a fresh take on the 4X strategy genre in a fatasy setting, with familar yet still original factions and great immersive gameplay. The game is made by the same company that made Endless Space and Dungeon of the Endless and have made Endless Legend with the involvement of the community. This is one of the factors I believe has truly lead to their success, through a platform called GAMES2GETHER, players have access to game design documents for which they share their feedback on the forums. I believe this is a great initiative as the team and the fans both get the game they want to play. There is also a voting system in place so that the players can vote on things like concept art, game features and even stuff that the community creates which will be implemented via in-game updates, which I think is brilliant.

Endless legend makes you do all the regular stuff like gathering food, building infrastructure, research for progress and financial development but all this feels like it has a purpose because the overarching storyline tells you that the planet you are on has a history of unexplained disasters and things seem to be getting worse. Somewhat like the television show Game of Thrones, winter is something to fear in Auriga, where all emphasis is on survival. The importance of what I have just mentioned becomes clear as in Winter no strategic resources are generated except for a specific faction called the Vaulters.

Endless Legend has eight faction to choose from, each with their own unique gameplay style and storyline. These factions play out quite differently and you should choose them according to your playstyle, I go with the Vaulters when I am aiming to reach a scientific victory and if I feel like anhilating my enemies, Necrophages are my first choice. Hence picking the faction you want to play with is of more consequence then it is in most games.

Influence is an interesting primary resource in Endless Legend as it is used to used to perform diplomatic actions and implement empire plan policies. Influence makes the diplomacy in Endless Legend interesting because you need influence points to be able to attack another faction and not only that the influence points you require are lower if you decide to threaten and in-turn warn the other faction or not. Although I have emphasized on the importance of choosing the right faction before, the faction you choose also makes a difference in terms of Diplomacy as the diplomatic route they take is dependant on the story and characteristics of that particular faction. The Roving Clans for example cannot declare war and can only initiate war by provoking thier enemies into attacking them.

What I dint like about the game however is the tutorial, it needs to be more comprehensive as it doesn't explain much and after completing it you feel the need for a second tutorial which comes by trial and error when you play your first game at the lowest difficulty and figure things out. The UI helps with this as it is simple but at the same time will take some getting used to, but overall you'll be good to go if you're ready to put in the time.

All being said, I think Endless Legend is a pure treat for the fans of 4X and turn-based strategy as it fixes many of the things this genre needed like the automated governers which takes out some of the drudgery that has been a part of such games for years, allowing you to focus on more important aspects. The game draws the best from both RPG and RTS giving you a game that you should not miss.
