E3 2016: What to expect from PlayStation's live show on June 13

Riding high on a tide of goodwill and commercial success, Sony PlayStation is apparently king of the castle ahead of an annual expectation-setting presentation at the 2016 Electronic Entertainment Expo. But a couple of tricky announcements could stand in its way.

Rounding out two days of video game shows, PlayStation's E3 briefing is set to start at 6pm PDT on June 13 (that's 6:30am IST the next day), with Livestream supported on PlayStation's Official site, YouTube, Twitch.tv and the PlayStation Network.

The sci-fi optimism of ambitious galactic ramble "No Man's Sky" has been eagerly anticipated since its public debut in 2013, and is likely to form a show highlight ahead of a planned August launch on PlayStation 4 and Windows PC.

Sony's other E3 certainty must be its PlayStation VR, the PlayStation 4's consumer-grade virtual reality headset.

Expected to accompany the announcement of a cheaper PS4 and a more powerful PlayStation 4 Neo, PSVR is set for an October 2016 launch and a relatively inexpensive $399 price could make it the mass-market standard.

Over 100 titles are in development or already available, potentially allowing PlayStation to present a roster covering everything from racing ("Project CARS," "Driveclub," "Gran Turismo Sport") and action ("EVE: Valkyrie," "ARK: Survival Evolved") through to more experimental fare ("Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes," "Classroom Aquatic.")

Looking at Sony's in-house studios, projects from Sucker Punch ("Infamous"), SIE Santa Monica ("God of War IV," "Bound") and even Naughty Dog ("Uncharted") could be shown or teased, with "The Order: 1886" studio Ready at Dawn adopting a completely different aesthetic with cartoon-style "De-formers."

And good relations with Electronic Arts for "Star Wars Battlefront" could lead to more well-received Star Wars moments come show time, while Activision's new "Destiny" release is likewise very high-profile; adventure game "I Am Setsuna" could be the start of a big new franchise for Square Enix.

But less straightforward in their treatment may be "Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare" and "Shenmue III."

At E3 2015, Sony revealed a new "Call of Duty" partnership, a considerable coup considering the franchise's longstanding Xbox links, but "Infinite Warfare" is now being viewed with suspicion having swapped its earth setting for outer space.

Meanwhile, "Shenmue III" was greeted with enthusiasm in 2015, but skepticism soon set in regarding the game's use of crowdfunding and the perceived visual deficiencies of a demo reel.

Overall, though, PlayStation has enjoyed successful E3's since winning a standing ovation in 2013; that's likely to continue given its subsequent form for assessing and then exceeding fan expectations.
