The manufacturer Dremel has unveiled a new-generation 3D printer that's Wi-Fi compatible and comes with a host of pre-loaded models. It's due to roll out over the next few months, and can be pre-ordered for $1299 (approx. Rs 87,500).

The Idea Builder 3D40 is a 3D printer that creates objects by building them layer by layer from melted plastic filament. The device has a 3.5-inch colour touch screen for managing print settings and comes with Wi-Fi connectivity so print jobs can be launched remotely. The new-gen version has also seen its build volume increased (254x152x171mm) for making even larger objects.

The accompanying Print Studio software can be used to create automatically generated objects, if necessary, and to manage the positioning of pieces while printing. The device comes with a catalogue of pre-loaded models, offering an overview of the printer's abilities. It can be used to print figurines, toys and all kinds of other creations with greater precision than the current version.

At launch, around 10 colours of plastic filament will be available for use with the Idea Builder 3D40, which comes in 162-meter spools.

As well as aiming its device at creative consumers, Dremel hopes to see its latest Idea Builder used in educational settings.

Dremel first launched the Idea Builder 3D20 in 2014. Priced under $1000 (approx. Rs 67,400), this low-cost 3D printer was capable of making small objects, toys or parts using PLA filament.

As many as 496,475 3D printers could be sold worldwide in 2016, according to Gartner. Sales of 3D printers of all kinds could more than double each year to reach over 5.5 million unit sales in 2019.
