From zipperless suitcases to biometric scanners, the next generation of suitcases and carry-on bags reimagine conventional design to create more multi-functional and secure travel companions. Take a look at a selection of the newest travel gear for business, leisure and tykes.

Zipperless Trunkster suitcase

It's not hard to see why this smart suitcase outshone every other piece of luggage at The International Travel Goods Show in Las Vegas this year to take second place in the Product Innovation Awards. Designers of the Trunkster dared to reimagine the conventional suitcase and eliminated the zipper completely. Instead, the suitcase opens and closes with a rolltop door, akin to cabinet doors for easier access. Along with a zipperless opening, the luggage features a digital scale built directly into the handle, as well as a USB charger and GPS tracker. Trunkster's built-in power bank is also removable and can be used independently of the suitcase to charge devices like tablets and smartphones, while the GPS allows owners to track their belongings anywhere around the world.

Checked baggage $495 (Approx Rs 33,000) || Carry-on baggage $435 (Approx Rs 29,000)

Watch how the suitcase works:

Ergonomically-designed Healthy Back Bag

As its name suggests, the Healthy Back Bag was developed with the spine in mind. Created by a leather craftsman, doctor, and chiropractor, the bag is designed to contour to the curves of the spine. Weight is distributed asymmetrically so that heavy loads feel lighter -- particularly beneficial for the packrats who tend to overstuff their carry-on bags. The result is reduced pressure on the neck, shoulders and back. Other features include four exterior pockets and up to six pockets on the inside that can fit an e-book or netbook, magazine, water bottle, keys, purse, gloves, and pens.

Available in assorted sizes. Prices start at £15 (Approx Rs 1,400) to £125 (Approx Rs 11,700)

Biometric-enabled suitcase, Space Case 1

When it launched last year, the Space Case 1 by Planet Traveler was billed as the world's most advanced smart suitcase, in large part for its biometric scanner which allows owners to unlock the case with the touch of a fingerprint. Along with features that have become standard in the new generation of luggage--digital scales and GPS tracking--the Space Case 1 also features a hands-free, Bluetooth speakerphone, allowing owners to talk to friends through their suitcase or play music through the built-in speaker system. An app-enabled anti-theft system will also alert owners when the suitcase is out of range, and trigger an alarm to scare off thieves.

Available in both carry-on and check-in sizes. Prices start at $329 (Approx Rs 21,900)

Anti-theft RiutBag

The idea behind this anti-theft bag is so simple, it's ingenious: Moving the outer zippers so that it lies against the wearer's back reduces easy access and helps deter thieves with prying fingers. When designer Sarah Giblin took the proposal to Kickstarter, others also saw the ingenuity of the redesign, helping the Briton raise more than double her original goal to £63,743($90,000 USD). Bags are made with water-resistant materials, and features include hidden strap pockets, handy for transport tickets; compartments for laptops and letter-sized documents; passports, keys and wallets; and pen holders.

Prices start at £79 (Approx Rs 7,400) and bags ship worldwide.

The Scootie

The happy faces say it all. For little people flyers ages 4 to 9, the Scootie makes carrying their own suitcase fun and easy with the addition of a scooter attached to the bag. The scooter part folds away when no longer in use.

Suggested retail price $99 (Approx Rs 6,600)
