LG had quite a few new devices to launch Wednesday night at CES 2017, with a surprise or two in store despite teasing quite a few of the roster early on. Here are some of the highlights from the event.

Blade-thin smart TVs

The star of the show was LG’s new Signature OLED TV W series. Consisting of five models, it features flat panel sizes between 65 to 77 inches with the “blade slim” design from the previous B7 and C7 series, “Picture-on-Glass” design of the E7 and G7, and the ‘Picture-on-Wall” of the newest W7.

The OLED panel is a staggering 2.57mm thin on the 65-inch model (weighing 17 pounds), and can be wall mounted with only magnetic brackets, limiting the space behind it. There’s a main display front and centre, with a Dolby Atmos soundbar below that also houses the main hardware, HDMI inputs, and so on.The series features HDR capability with support for HDR10, Dolby Vision, and HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma, as well as Dolby Atmos, and the televisions run on the latest version (3.5) of LG’s webOS smart TV platform.

The 65-inch Signature OLED W will begin shipping in February, and will be available in stores by March, though pre-orders will be available in the US starting January 5. The 77-inch model won’t arrive until a little later, which is well and good considering the (as yet unknown) price is likely to break your heart.

A smart refrigerator

Another entry was the LG Instaview, its smart refrigerator. It features a 29-inch touch LCD that can turn transparent with a knock, to let you peek into the fridge, or help you manage household supplies with sticky note grocery lists, online shopping, and even weather reports.

The Instaview is also powered by LG’s webOS platform. Notably, however, it offers full integration with Alexa, Amazon’s digital assistant embedded in its Echo IoT hub device. You could even use your fridge to control your smart home from the kitchen, or check the gallery of automated photos of the food inside while at the grocery store.

The Internet of Robots

Last of all was LG’s expansion of their IoT ecosystem with a number of robots. The company announced a whole fleet of bots to do everything; from robots at the airport to guide you around and clean up, to a lawn-mowing bot, and even a hub to control your home.

As such the LG Hub Robot connects to other smart appliances in your home, and uses Alexa’s voice recognition to receive your verbal commands. It has an interactive display that can showcase a wide variety of information like images of the contents of your refrigerator, your music playlist and even event reminders. The ‘face’ on the display can also display a range of emotions, such as responding to consumers using body language, and even nodding its head when answering simple questions.

Unfortunately, there’s no word yet on when these bots will be made available, and at what price.
