Various tech and broadcast companies have teamed up to bring what they’re calling Ultra High Definition (UHD) viewing to the public, and they announced the first set of consumer pieces during day one of the Consumer Electronics Forum (CES), in Las Vegas yesterday.

Heavyweights like Samsung, Panasonic, Sony and LG are part of the association, along with content makers like Netflix, Twentieth Century Fox and Walt Disney Studios, who will be providing the UHD content for the beefed up TVs announced.

TV heavyweights such as Samsung, LG and Panasonic said Monday at the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas that they've partnered with video providers such as Netflix, Walt Disney Studios, Warner Bros. Entertainment, and Twentieth Century Fox, to set standards for high-quality UHD content. The UHD Alliance, as they call themselves, said at the conference that they will be setting the bar for next-generation video entertainment by establishing new standards with a focus on 4K and higher resolutions, high dynamic range, wider colour gamut and immersive 3D audio.

As such, the companies have rolled out a slew of new TVs to feast your eyes on (and most likely empty your wallet into)

LG announced its all new OLED range, entirely in 4K resolution, in flat and curved screen models….and both. Yes, its 77EG9900 model is a flexible screen that can curve to improve your solo viewing at the touch of a button. I have a feeling, I’d be making movie-like hydraulic noises everytime I hit that button. They’ve also upgraded their smart TV platform to Web OS 2.0.

Then there’s Samsung with it’s SUHD technology televisions. While the JS8500 series still use LEDs, they also have nanocrystal semiconductors wrapped around the edges of the TV, allowing for better colour depth and efficiency. Another change the company is making is to introduce it’s in-house-developed Tizen OS, one that hasn’t even been in their smartphones yet, likely in an effort to garner some popularity for the OS and get more homes acclimated to it.

Then there’s Sony with the X900C, its slimmest LED TV; just 4.9mm at its thinnest. To put that another way, this television is slimmer than the Sony Xperia phone. Wowsa. It’s also, for the first time, supporting Google’s Android TV OS, with access to the Play Store and support for Google Cast and Chromecast. And the cherry on the cake, this baby can also connect to the PlayStation Now network and stream PS3 games with only a Dualshock controller; no console pairing needed.

All these devices will be available by mid 2015, but no prices have been announced yet. The UHD Alliance, however, does make one thing clear. The TV giants are not ready to roll over for PCs and tablets yet, and they would instead give you a television to do your tablet’s/console’s job. If this new push leads to Transformer TVs that follow me to my seat of choice, fetch me drinks, do my taxes and pat my head while I sleep, who am I to stand in the way of innovation?
