The thing about owning a luxury car is that inherent sense of worry associated with not knowing who’s doing what to it when it’s not in the owner’s presence. Especially when it’s parked unattended in a public location, there are any number of ‘transgressions’ it could be subject to: from loiterers leaning on it to errant kids taking a set of keys to its side.
While we cringe thinking about this, BMW has apparently been working on an idea that gives you a real-time view of the action. They decided it may be a good idea to let you know exactly what’s going on around your car, like visually showing you what’s the condition of its environment.
According to a story posted on Mashable, a teased statement from the Bavarian luxury car manufacturer along with a photo stated: ‘Always know what is happening around your vehicle. The next generation of the BMW 5 Series with the BMW Connected feature ‘Remote View 3D’.
Deconstructing those lines, it’s appears clear that the app will involve a technology that lets owners of the new 5-Series view a real-time, 360-degree view of the car and its surroundings. The car will most likely use its on-board cameras to transmit views to an accompanying smartphone app, resulting in what may be a stitched composite video feed of the view around the car.
Which is all well and good. But really, is the added stress of being able to see what’s happening around your car--and not be able to do a thing about it--what a luxury car owner (or any car owner for that matter) actually needs? Well maybe not, but it does make for a good bullet point on the feature list brochure to set it apart from its competitors.
