Bang & Olufsen. It’s a name that evokes purity of design and acoustic capability that has defined the state of the art. While this Danish company has always been referenced in hallowed whispers among audiophile circles, its next flagship speaker, by all accounts, embodies an aural experience that is designed to lift it to an altogether other-worldly level.

Known simply as the BeoLab 90, each of the speakers in its paired set is capable of putting out an astounding 8,200 watts of power. True to B&O tradition, these monsters are built like little else--each weighs in at 137Kg each, with about half that heft accounted for by a solid aluminium internal structure. Within the curiously origami-shaped structure is no less than 18 individual speaker drivers--seven tweeters, seven mids, and four woofers--that are controlled by an equal number of purpose-built integrated Class D power amps that drive the entire show.

Its title claim is the unique “Beam Width Control” feature that enables each speaker to emanate sound to one particular direction, or even to all directions--yes, 360 degrees--at once. And you can wield this level of acoustic control from the app on your smartphone, which opens up a world of listening possibilities--soaking in your favourite symphony in your favourite chair, or opening up the soundstage for a living room full of friends as they pulsate to a house rhythm.

A pair of these acoustic weapons will set you back by $80,000 (approximately 52 lacs.) Well, start saving.
