We’re all familiar with flying in commercial airplanes, the invention that has enabled covering vast distances quickly and in comfort. But so far as personal transportation goes, there hasn’t been anything as comparable. That may change, if drone technology company Flyt Aerospace has its way.

The company is currently developing a system that uses modular drone rotors to increase the lifting power of small, off-the-shelf drones. Up until now, the drone is capable of lifting a person about two feet from the ground for roughly 10 minutes.

The Flyt 16 is a 16-propeller multirotor vehicle, powered by lithium batteries, which consists of a lift-producing frame on top and a pilot pod that attaches below. It weighs around 159 Kg and can fly with a single person on board, but only 2-3 feet off the ground. Its flight time is expected to go up a little in future.

The company envisions this device being used for personal commuter flying, personal tourism, emergency services, and military and cargo purposes.

Flyt Aerospace believes that even though people can fly around in airplanes, these generally require runways and expensive infrastructure that is often unavailable in regions such as densely-packed urban areas, mountainous terrain and the like. Even helicopters require relatively larger spaced in which to operate from, and tend to be very noisy. Personal drones, much like their smaller counterparts, could be far more flexible to maneuver and operate, enabling many practical use cases.

With Flyt 16, the company is trying to change the mechanism of personal flight, which could radically change the personal mobility game. Could this be the precursor to the Jetsons era?

The company stated that it wants to open up a world of possibilities in transportation by creating vehicles that can fly a person and take off/land vertically.  It believes the best way to do this is through multi-rotor vehicles that are large enough to carry a person, at least in the long term. It adds, “Think of it as a much bigger version of the toy quadcopters you've seen -- except a whole lot better!”
