A new patent by Apple describes how in the future, an iPhone could detect how it is being held and will automatically move “interface elements for optimal thumb reach.”

The new patent states that, it will "include a touch-sensitive display and sensor circuitry that detects whether a user's right hand or left hand is being used... Control circuitry may arrange icons and virtual buttons on the touch-sensitive display based on which hand is being used to provide touch input to the touch-sensitive display.” The Next Web explains that the company can implement the feature with existing iPhone hardware, which means this sort of smart UI shifting could simply be an update away.

However, Apple says that it is considering specialised hardware, such as touch sensors on the body of the phone for extra accuracy, which would probably be the better choice in the long run. An automated one-handed mode could be a game changer for the future.
